Breaking the Habit: How Quitting Smoking Changed This Member’s Life Beyond Health

“I feel proud of myself. I am now looking forward to going to the epilepsy clinic in 5 months so I can tell them I am 6 months quit.”

Ex-Smoker, Your Health Oldham

My Story

I am a 62-Year-old man with lifelong epilepsy requiring vagus nerve stimulation, Heart problems, COPD, Anxiety and Depression.

In early 2022 I attempted to quit smoking when I smoked around 60 per day. I reduced my cigs to 12 per day at the start of this quit (2023) motivated to improve my health.

I started my quit but was still smoking 5 cigs per day I didn’t admit to this as thought it was ok. It wasn’t until the visit from Lorraine to do my CO reading at 4 weeks that proved to me that cutting down was not an option as my reading was CO34 I was disappointed and realized I was only cheating myself by thinking it was ok to smoke a few. It was a wake-up call and I was then determined to stop completely. I wanted to prove to Lorraine that I could do it and asked her to come back to do the reading again when I was properly 4 weeks quit.

Life Changing Support

I can breathe much better now, using less inhalers than when I was smoking and I can pay my bills comfortably. I didn’t realise how much money I was spending on cigarettes. I have even started to put some money in my savings.

I now have a shave first thing in the morning instead of a cig which makes me feel good!

Now 6 Months Quit

The best thing was Lorraine (Stop Smoking Advisor) coming back to do my 4wks CO reading at home. I was really looking forward to blowing into it to prove to her I have done it. I feel proud of myself. I am now looking forward to going to the epilepsy clinic in 5 months so I can tell them I am 6 months quit. They have been on at me for years to stop smoking.
